People found one of the first documented sources mentioning the use of masks in Venice as far back as the 13th century. The masks were traditionally worn with decorative beads matching in colour. People wore several distinct styles of mask in the Venice Carnival, some with identifying names. People with different occupations wore different masks. The mask-makers had their own statute dated 10 April 1436. They belonged to the fringe of painters. Certainly they had help in their task from sign-painters. That is to say they drew faces onto plaster in a range of different shapes. As a result they got a lot of money for theirs job.
